The Fool's Gold quest in Dead Island 2 is one of the most rewarding Lost and Found missions available on the Santa Monica Pier. By tracking down a paper trail left behind by two survivors, players can unlock a hidden safe buried in the sand. Completing this objective grants the legendary Blood Rage knife alongside valuable crafting materials.
Starting the Quest at Lifeguard HQ
To initiate the quest, players must head to the Lifeguard HQ location near the Santa Monica Pier after completing the main story mission Boardwalking Dead. Defeat the named Crusher zombie named Dante who spawns outside the lower level of the headquarters building. Searching Dante's body rewards you with a note titled A Totally Legit Letter, which begins the paper trail.
After picking up the letter, head inside the Lifeguard HQ garage corridor to locate Randy's locker. Unlocking this locker provides the next clue, pointing players toward two secret meeting locations scattered around the pier area.
Tracing Clues Across the Santa Monica Pier
The first clue leads players directly to the back of the Ferris Wheel located on the boardwalk. Navigate behind the yellow and blue ice cream shack near the wheel to find a phone sitting on a wooden bench. Picking up this phone reveals one portion of the safe combination.
Next, travel to the northern end of the strip mall area lined with food stands and shops. Locate the narrow alleyway next to Luigi's Pizzeria and the Merry-Go-Round Cafe. Search near the trash bins on the floor to collect Dante's burner phone and complete the combination.
Unlocking the Buried Safe and Claiming Rewards
With all combination clues gathered, return to the exterior perimeter of the Lifeguard HQ building. Look along the sandy path between the HQ wall and the outer fence to locate the safe buried halfway in the ground. Approaching the safe triggers an ambush, requiring players to clear out a wave of aggressive zombies.
Once the infected horde is completely cleared, interact with the safe to open it and finalize the quest. Inside, players receive 2,000 XP, the Superior Melee Liquidator Mod, and the Legendary Blood Rage dagger. This powerful weapon provides exceptional critical hit damage, making it a valuable asset for late-game combat.
